Is the Abortion Pill Legal in Texas?

Is the Abortion Pill Legal in Texas?

If you’re considering an abortion, your most powerful ally is the facts.

In this blog, we hope to clear any confusion there is about the abortion pill, especially in places like Texas.

When Can I Use the Abortion Pill?

A medical abortion – also called the abortion pill – is an option for women who are no more than 70 days from their last missed period.

The further out from conception you are, the less effective the abortion pill is. At 10 weeks, the pill’s effectiveness decreases drastically.

To determine how far along you are in fetal development, it’s best to get an ultrasound. This is a more precise way to determine your date of conception.

What Kinds of Abortion Pills Are Available to Me?

While most medications are similar, abortion pills generally fall into two categories: ones that are approved by the FDA and ones that are not.

If you’re looking online, you may have noticed this. Generally speaking, abortion pills that the FDA approves are significantly more expensive than ones that are not.

Abortion pills that aren’t FDA-approved also have much longer shipping times due to being shipped from outside of the country – usually in places like India – where medicines are much less regulated than they are in the United States.

Can I Use the Abortion Pill in Texas?

Since the Supreme Court overruled its previous decision in Roe v. Wade, the legality of abortion has become a state issue instead of a federal one.

In Texas, all forms of abortion – including medical abortions (i.e., the abortion pill) – are illegal. As such, you cannot use the abortion pill in Texas.

When shopping online, retailers will still try to get the pills to you. However, they cannot provide you with FDA-approved medication, and you are still liable for the legal consequences of taking the pill.

At-Home Abortions & The Abortion Pill

If you are able to get ahold of an abortion pill, you will need to self-administer the drug. This can be challenging for many, and the lack of medical professionals means you risk taking the pill incorrectly and risking bodily harm in doing so.

Additionally, the second abortion pill works by ejecting the fetus from your body at whatever stage it is in. You need to be mentally prepared for this, as there is a possibility of seeing a partially-formed fetus exiting your body. For many, this is a traumatizing experience.
